Fashion Photography Blogger Shoot

A close friend of mine has decided to make a go at running a fashion blog and came to me looking for some fashion photography. I hadn’t ever shot any fashion photography before, but I have shot many portraits over the years so we thought it would be fun to give it a try. We scheduled the shoot for a Friday afternoon. I like to shoot in the later part of the day so I can find good shade to work with. I have a park in my neighborhood we go to and I love the backdrop there. There are a lot of big shade trees so it’s easy to find good spots even in the middle of full sun. I told Alex to bring a few outfits, do her hair and makeup and be ready to look her best for the shoot. It’s always nice if we have a few outfit choices so we can mix up the images. Fashion photography is all about the clothes so make sure you have choices! She also brought her sister because sometimes if you have someone to laugh and chat with you can get more natural images out of the person you are photographing. So the girls and I set off for the park and got to work.

We started shooting at the park with Alex wearing a pretty floral dress. I don’t usually like shooting in full sun, but I really liked the way this first shot turned out with the light behind her head. It’s a very flattering pose for her and shows off her long hair and tattoo! When you are working with models it’s important you work with them to find their best poses and facial expressions. It’s your job to work with the model to get the best possible images. Her sister was making her laugh so this was a very natural pose for her.

For the next set of images we drove over to the Simi Valley Town Center mall to walk around and find some nice backdrops. There are a lot of vacant shops at this mall with try creative entrances that make for nice backgrounds. This brick wall was in front of the old Anthropology space and really made her outfit pop. Whenever I have a photoshoot I like to scout the area ahead of time and find good areas to shoot. Sometimes you can find interesting walls, old trees, colored mosaics, even graffiti can make for an interesting shot. Always look around and keep an open mind for what will work. Great creative!

Fashion Photography Details

With all photo shoots it is important to get the detail shots and in fashion photography items such as the shoes are very important to highlight the fashion. I did a combination of close and tight shots, medium and wide shots, details and full picture images. Tell a story. The best images can show you something in many different ways. Try to get many angles and views of the same thing so you have the most to work with. I like to get creative shots of the details too in order to keep the viewer interested.

Fashion Photography - Sister (Diz)

Since Alex brought her sister we thought it would be fun to do some fashion photography of Diz. Her sister was a natural with her poses and facial expressions and these girls knew how to work the camera! They each have their own sense of style and their outfit selections and poses showed that.
